Mitsubishi Electric’s Climaveneta brand is upgrading the Poitiers hospital with energy
Poitiers is a university hospital located in La Milétrie, an area southeast of the city of Poitiers in France. The hospital provides medical services to the city’s 110,000 residents by offering a comprehensive health care system: short stay, follow-up and rehabilitation, and long-term care. The hospital consists of 5 facilities with a total area of 280,000 sq.m. and offers 2,000 beds and additional special services, such as operating rooms, and intensive care units.
Thanks to careful and diligent management, the hospital has an excellent financial performance and is the leading university hospital in France. This gives it the possibility for large investments, especially for its architectural and technical systems.

The hospital has started an energy efficiency improvement project as part of ISO 50001 certification and implemented an investment plan to renovate the air conditioning system.
With the goal of reducing the overall energy consumption of the space by 10% and a payback period of approximately 5 years, the technical consultant replaced the two 30-year-old chillers with a much more efficient chiller.
The new air conditioning system at the Poitiers hospital is based on the 1 megawatt TECS2 HFO series chiller from the Climaveneta brand of Mitsubishi Electric. The unit has a Turbocor compressor and saves energy, especially at some loads. Additionally, the TECS2 chiller has a smaller energy footprint compared to any screw compressor chiller. This allowed hospital officials to place the chiller outside, directly above the engine room, saving space and facilitating maintenance.
David Martineau, Director of Works & Services at Hervé Thermique, says: “The main limitation for this project was the lack of space in the engine room. We had to create a 3D model to optimize the piping and equipment layout for maintenance purposes. In the end we were able to find the best possible solution by installing the new unit directly above the engine room.”
